There are tons of sustainable fashion brands for women that prioritize both ethical and eco-friendly practices in their production processes.
Here are a few favorites that you should consider supporting:
Reformation
Reformation is a Los Angeles based clothing brand that sells trendy and sustainable pieces. The company provides a quarterly sustainability report to share their progress. They also utilize a RefScale, this tracks that carbon and water footprint on their pieces. The brand calculates how their pieces help reduce impacts compared with other clothing in the United States. This is then share on every product page on their website and explains exactly what impact each item has on the environment. They have been 100% carbon-neutral since 2015 and invest in green building infrastructure in order to minimize their water, waste, and energy-footprints.
Everlane
Everlane creates versatile and timeless pieces with eco-friendly materials. They eliminated all virgin plastic from their supply chain in 2021, including in their products, packaging, shipping supplies, stores, and offices. They use organic cotton and create their denim in facilities that exceed the environmental regulations held by any other factories in the industry. They use Roica V550 yarn in the denim, which is the first stretch yarn that is not made of harmful chemicals. This has made them one of the first brands to make denim that doesn’t “dirty the plant.”
Patagonia
Patagonia is not only known for their outdoor gear and clothing, but also their environmentally progressive values. They have SO many beneficial prgrams and practices in place to help our environment and the working conditions of their employees. Patagonia has pledged 1% of their sales to go to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. In addition, they have created a non-profit corporation in order to encourage business owners to do the same.
Levi’s
Levi’s, the iconic denim brand, focuses on consumption, climate, and the community. They have been using water less processes since 2011 and as of 2020 have saved nearly 13 billion liters of water. Levi’s have also been using LED lighting, modernizing heat production, reducing natural gas usage, and incorporating many other changes in order to be more energy efficient. Each pair of jeans purchased are meant to stand the test of time and stop fast fashion.
Mara Hoffman
Mara Hoffman is another brand that carefully chooses material for their products. They use do not use any leather, mulesed sheep wool, feathers, or fur. Instead, they incorporate climate beneficial wool, hemp, organic cotton, linen, etc. As far as manufacturing, they prioritize fair treatment for their workers and are eager to minimize their waste and energy usage.
Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney is more of a luxury brand that is committed to ethical manufacturing processes and a strong focus on animal welfare. They use a new material innovation, MIRUM®, which is an animal leather alternative that is free of plastic and can restore benefit the environment. They stated a campaign (Stella x Greenpeace) which consists of pieces that go to stopping deforestation. They use recycled materials, wool sourced from farms that are committed to animal welfare, products free of leather or animal fur, and so much more.
